How to Play the Friend Trivia Game: Rules, Rounds, and Tips for Unforgettable Fun
So I created this game for me and my friends this weekend while we went camping together. There were 16 kids and 13 adults and I wanted a fun way for us to get to know each other better. So I thought I would share this with everyone and feel free to spread it to others, try it out with your friends and give me any suggestions you have to make it better. ENJOY and have FUN!
Here’s how you can set it up and play!
What is the Friend Trivia Game?
The Friend Trivia Game is the three-round activity where players answer trivia questions, yes/no questions, and "this or that” scenarios - all centered around the people in the room.
The twist? In the second and third rounds, players can draw random names again (we keep the same person throughout the game) and must answer questions based on the friend they picked - without revealing who it is until the end. It’s a mix of guessing, laughter, and personal stories that keeps everyone engaged.
What You’ll Need:
A list of 20 trivia questions (PRINT HERE)
A list of 8 yes/no questions (same sheet as above)
A list of 16 'this or that’ questions (same sheet as above)
A bowl or container with everyone’s names written on slips of paper (print name slips here)
Pens for each player
How to Play
Objective
The goal of the Friend Trivia Game is to see how well you know your friends! Players will answer three series of trivia, regular trivia questions, yes/no, and "this or that" questions based on randomly drawn names from the group.
Game Structure
The game consists of three rounds:
Trivia Round (20 Questions)
Yes/No Round (8 Questions)
This or That Round (16 Questions)
I like to start with “this or that” and then go into Yes/No and end on Trivia. Do what works best for you and your group J
Round 1: Trivia Round
Players pick names without the other person knowing yet
All players answer the same 20 trivia questions about the person they picked
Then they go around and meet with their person to see how many questions they got correct
Each correct answer earns 1 point.
Round 2: Yes/No Round
You can keep the same person, OR one by one, players draw another random name from the bowl mixing it up (I like to keep the same name throughout the entire game, however, you can chose different names for each section if you want).
For each of the 8 yes/no questions, players answer based on the person whose name they drew.
Example: "Would this person survive a zombie apocalypse?"
The player writes “Yes” or “No” based on what they believe.
After answering all 8 questions, the person reveals who they had and shares their answers.
Round 3: This or That Round
Again, keep the same person or players draw a random name from the bowl.
For each of the 16 'this or that' questions, players decide which option best fits the person whose name they drew.
Example: "Early bird or night owl?" "Beach or mountains?"
After answering all questions, the player reveals their person and their choices.
Scoring (Optional)
Trivia: 1 point per correct answer.
Yes/No: 1 point if the person agrees with your answer.
This or That: 1 point if the person agrees with your answer.
Winning
The player with the most points at the end is the Friend Trivia Champion!
Alternatively, skip strict scoring and focus on sharing stories, laughing, and learning more about each other.
Additional Rules
Players must keep their drawn name secret until the end of each round.
No swapping names.
Encourage honest and kind answers—this game is about connection and fun!
Extra Tips
Keep the names secret until the end of each round.
Mix up easy, funny, and thoughtful questions to keep everyone engaged.
You can customize the number of questions based on your group size and how long you want the game to last. We did ours for about 25 minutes and it was perfect with a lot of laughter.
Add a prize for the winner to keep things exciting. I did a $20 for first place, $10 for second place and a random prize for third. We also had a tie, so we did rock paper scissors best two out of three :)
Final Thoughts
The Friend Trivia Game is more than some game - it’s the way to build stronger connections, spark meaningful conversations, and create memories that last. Whether you’re hosting some big party or one intimate get-together, this game is guaranteed to bring smiles, stories, and surprises. We had SO much fun together!
If you try it out, let me know, would love to know how it went and how I can make it better for others? Thank you and happy trivia!
