Never Pass Up the Opportunity to Make Someone Else Feel Valuable

I’m on the beach this week, and I’m reminded of something I deeply believe:

Never pass up the opportunity to make someone else feel valuable.

Sometimes we don’t accept help because we don’t want to be a bother.

“No, I’ve got it.”

“You don’t need to do that.”

“I’m good.”

We say these things because we’re trying to be considerate. But sometimes, by refusing someone’s help, we’re also taking away their opportunity to contribute.

People love helping people.

There is something powerful about being needed. When someone asks for our advice, accepts our help, or allows us to use something we’re good at, we feel valuable. We feel like we matter.

So why are we sometimes so resistant to giving that same gift to someone else?

Being independent is valuable. So is being connected.

When someone offers to carry the bag, let them.

When someone knows more than we do, let them teach us.

When someone offers their time, knowledge, or support, receive it when it feels right.

Accepting help doesn’t make us less capable. It gives another person the opportunity to contribute.

And that creates connection.

So while I’m here in one of my happy places, I’m reminding myself:

Help people whenever you can. And allow people to help you, too.

Because making someone feel valuable isn’t always about what we give them.

Sometimes it’s about what we’re willing to receive.

Never pass up the opportunity to make someone else feel valuable.
